If you are one of the poor souls using Android, and happen to be running on a version < 4.2 – and your vendor isn’t going to supply an upgrade to 4.2 – then i’m afraid you are SOL.
I got a PS3 for the kids. The Wii we’ve had since 2006 was just a bit too UnCool – I was told we need to modernise.
Perhaps i’m getting old – but the user experience in using this device was very sub-par. Yes, it has nice graphics – looks stunning in 1080p – but here are my rants – in no particular order:
1. You can only charge the controllers while the PS3 is on. Not only that, but you can’t charge it from a USB hub, unless it is a powered hub – and it is connected to a PC. Presumably so that it can negotiate 500mA charging rather than the default USB 100mA. Why on earth did they just not use AA’s like the Wii or Xbox? Rechargeable AA’s are ubiquitous – we have dozens of the things for all sorts of devices.
2. Updates. WTF – it seems like any time I try to do anything there is an update. Put a new game in – wait 15 minutes for an update to download. Want to try a new feature – wait for something else to download. Seriously hampers my user experience on this device.
3. Move. It seems to work well enough – perhaps it is technically better than the wii motion controller but it all seems like an afterthought. Not enough games support it – and the ones that do don’t seem to work well at all – almost like poor ports from the Wii versions of the same game. You need to use the PS3 Eye camera with the move on some games like the dance games – but they designed this PS3 Eye to sit on a flat surface. Has Sony (a large television manufacturer) not realised that people have flatscreen TVs which might be mounted on something other than a table? How about providing a camera which will sit nicely on top of a flat screen – a bit like the Wii sensor bar does.
4. USB ports at the front? WTF? So I have to plug my PS3 Eye into the front of my PS3 – then pull the wire to the back of the machine to reach my TV. Looks stupid and and a very poor design. Not only that, but the PS3 slim only has two USB ports – so i’m constantly swapping things and out. Poor show Sony!
5. The remote. WTF – bluetooth with no IR support? How am I supposed to use my harmony remote? Oh, yes buy another £50 device to translate my IR to bluetooth. Great – thanks (not)!.
6. The user interface. Oviously made for people with the kind of vision required to become a fighter pilot. I have a 42″ screen – and you could not use all the real-estate on that screen to make the text more readable? Yeah, i’m a 40 something old fart and wear glasses – but to be honest, even with glasses I have a problem reading that font. You offer all sorts of options with regards to the colour of the screen and background – but nothing is offered for font size! Really pisses me off.
7. Transcoding of streaming media. WTF -why? Why not just support all the modern codecs?
I’m sure there is more – i’ll update this I am sure!
